Technical Writer/Documentation Specialist

Terms of Contract

  • Contract Type: Contract position (up to 40 hours per week) for 2-3 months. Possibility of continued work beyond the initial engagement.
  • Location: Open to candidates in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Language Requirement: Must be a native English speaker or demonstrate C2-level English proficiency, as all documentation is intended for an English-speaking audience.

About the Role

We’re looking for a thoughtful and detail-oriented Technical Writer/Documentation Specialist to build and maintain documentation across several projects. You’ll be responsible for capturing institutional knowledge, writing detailed internal and client-facing guides, and ensuring that our software and processes are clearly documented and easy to understand. This role is critical for ensuring continuity and clarity as our systems evolve and grow. It's ideal for someone who can absorb complex functionality and translate it into accessible, well-structured content. You’ll work closely with our developers, designers, and project managers to make complex systems understandable for both technical and non-technical audiences. Requirements

To excel in this role, you should demonstrate:

  • Experience writing technical documentation for web applications or SaaS platforms
  • Proven ability to translate technical details into clear, structured documentation for mixed audiences
  • Excellent written communication, organization, and version control disciplin
  • Ability to self-direct and manage multiple priorities across concurrent projects

Preferred Skills (Nice-to-Haves)

  • Experience documenting web applications or APIs in Laravel, Vue, or similar ecosystem
  • Solid understanding of software development concepts and terminology
  • Familiarity with version control and Git-based workflows
  • Light design or formatting skills to create clean, readable documentation
  • Experience building and managing documentation systems or knowledge bases

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for active projects, including:
    • Feature-level how-to guides and user manuals
    • Onboarding and training materials for clients and internal teams
    • System architecture overviews
    • API and integration references
    • Documentation of developer workflows, deployment processes, and standard operating procedures
  • Partner with technical leads to ensure documentation remains current with each release cycle
  • Support knowledge transfer during team transitions, onboarding, and offboarding by maintaining clear internal guides and process documentation
  • Help define and champion internal documentation standards and best practices across projects
  • Adapt content as feedback is received and product functionality changes
  • Coordinate with the project team to identify areas where documentation is most needed
